Gail Trezise  Ceramic Artist

My work is sculptural rather than functional, produced by a process I have developed using cellulose sponge, which I cut to shape and then hand or machine stitch into moulds, sometimes stitching patterns into each piece to enhance the texture of the sponge,

The moulds are used to slip cast my forms, using earthenware or porcelain slip, I am continually experimenting with new designs for moulds, cutting, stitching and manipulating my chosen fabrics. Each piece takes many hours to make.

Unlike traditional plaster moulds even when the same shape mould is used, each piece will emerge from the kiln with its own unique texture and identity as the moulds are destroyed in the making process.

Once bisc fired, the pieces are hand painted or air brushed using layers of under glaze colour to build depth and enhance the texture, finishing with a Matt or satin glaze.
